Deason

BAGHDAD – Spc. Toni Deason, serving with Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 56th Infantry Brigade Combat Team 36th Inf. Div., Multi-National Division - Baghdad, is a soccer player who just happens to also be a Soldier. Specialist Deason, from Houston, Texas, has played soccer most of her life.   Starting out when she was five, Sergeant Deason played soccer throughout her adolescence. At Coppell High School, she played for four years as a keeper, her team improving each of her four years with the squad. After high school, she went on to play and start for four years at McNeese State in Lake Charles, La. where she excelled, ranking as the number two overall performing keeper in the nation her junior season. The 2005 college graduate found herself looking toward the military when she joined the Texas National Guard in April 2007. On Jan. 16, she got a chance to show off her athletic prowess with some Iraqis. However, the former college soccer star wasn’t alone. “They were really quick; really good players,” Specialist Deason explained.

Lindsay Cogburn’s biggest fan won’t be at her biggest soccer match of the season Saturday. Colin McDaniel’s biggest fan won’t be his biggest match, either. Cogburn and the Hardin-Simmons Cowgirls will be in San Antonio to face Trinity in an NCAA Division III third-round playoff contest. McDaniel, to whom Cogburn will be wed May 22, already is in Dubuque, Iowa, for the Cowboys’ sectional round match against Whitworth. For those on a map quest, that’s 1,219 miles apart. They’ll keep up with each other’s matches through their parents, who will report scores.
Cogburn and McDaniel, who both play midfield positions, met as freshmen at Coppell High School and began dating as juniors. Soccer has been central in their lives. But as seniors, they’ll be moving forward from that soon enough when they graduate next spring and move to the Dallas area, where Cogburn, a speech pathology major, will attend grad school. McDaniel is a business management major...

October 30, 2009 SFA Outlasts Northwestern... SFA took the lead twice before Kimmel's goal, but, each time, Northwestern answered with a goal to tie the game. Kimmel delivered the knock-out blow in the 84th minute, just four minutes after the Demons' Sarah Sadler tied the game with her second goal of the night. …SFA looked completely in command going into the break, as the Ladyjacks held a 19-0 edge in shot attempts at halftime. But the Demons evened the count early in the second half, when Sadler notched her first goal. Sadler, the sister of SFA freshman Laura Sadler, settled a corner kick off the foot of Rachel O'Steen and beat SFA 'keeper Courtney Bauder with a low shot to the right from 10 yards out ...Sarah Sadler tied the score again in the 80th minute when she blasted a high shot from 25 yards out into the top of the net, just out of Bauder's reach. Maddy Hall was credited with an assist on the play…

EDMOND (Oct. 9) – Two goals in a three-minute span late in the contest capped off a dominating – and frustrating – second half that carried Central Oklahoma to a 2-0 Lone Star Conference shutout of Angelo State Friday afternoon at Wantland Stadium. The Bronchos totally overwhelmed ASU in the final 45 minutes of the contest in cold, windy conditions, outshooting the Rambelles a staggering 20-0 in the second half while going with the wind. But UCO missed numerous chances – some from point-blank range – and the game was scoreless until the Bronchos finally broke through with goals by Dominique Dinka and Meghan Saliba in the final 11 minutes to put ASU away.

"The team played very well," SFA head coach George Van Linder said. "We were worried at half. Being up, 2-0, we knew we had to get a third goal to put the game out of reach. I was so happy that they got it so early in the second half." That third goal came off the foot of freshman Laura Sadler barely three minutes into the second period, with Cash and frosh Becky Johnson assisting on the play.If you click on "photo gallery", Laura has 4 pics.

Dave Zucconi '55 Award
The winner of the Dave Zucconi '55 Award, given annually to the male varsity athlete who most consistently displays the ideals of sportsmanship and fair play, is men's soccer senior Steve Sawyer (Coppell, TX). Few represent the ideal of a leader better than Sawyer, who was the team captain last season, and earned the respect of teammates and coaches throughout his career. Sawyer has played in every match during his four-year career, and missed just one start in 65 opportunities. Despite leading the Bears to three NCAA Tournament appearances and two Ivy League titles, Sawyer is always quick to deflect praise, crediting his teammates first and foremost.

Keeping tradition Alive Ex-Coppell coach hasn’t missed a beat with Klein
By JENNY DIAL Copyright 2009 Houston Chronicle

Julio Cortez Chronicle

Boys' soccer coach John Lawhon left a successful program at Coppell to take Allen Baker's place at Klein.

Klein boys soccer coach John Lawhon didn’t have the most ideal reunion with his former team. Coppell, the team he coached to a state title in 2004 and three other state tournaments, defeated Klein 5-0 on Friday at Turner during the Kingwood Tournament.

Lawhon took over the Klein program this season when the state’s winningest coach Allen Baker retired after 26 years and 656 wins at Klein. When the job opened, Lawhon was coaching in his hometown of Corsicana, where he lived the whole time he coached in Coppell and commuted every day, a trip of 75 miles one way.

Since the UIL added soccer as a sport in 1983, Coppell has been a top program in the Dallas area and Klein has been one in Houston. Lawhon played a major role in Coppell’s success early this decade and now he hopes to keep Klein near the top of the rankings in the Houston area.

No regrets on move

To coach Klein, Lawhon had no regrets.

“The community cares a lot about the sport and it is well-supported,” he said. “I felt like it would be a great place to be.”

Despite Friday’s loss, Lawhon is happy with his decision. It was a little strange to see his former team and a handful of former players. Not as strange, though, for a couple of Coppell players who competed for Lawhon when they were sophomores.

“In the first half, it was so weird, because I felt like we were playing against ourselves,” Coppell senior Steven Haltom said. “It was great to see coach Lawhon because he taught a lot of us what we know now.”

A common thread

Lawhon said Coppell coach Shane Bybee has done a great job keeping Coppell in its place as one of the top teams in the state. The Cowboys run a one-touch passing game, meaning they quickly pass the ball to keep the defenders off-balance. It’s the same style Lawhon introduced when he started coaching in Coppell.

“I got to be a small part of that and I’m happy to see that they are doing well,” said Lawhon, whose team plays the Woodlands at 1 p.m. today. “This wasn’t a great game for us but if we played them again, it would be different. We can take some lessons from this one, but they are a great team and it was nice to see them again.”

Bybee said Lawhon had to take on the role Baker played so well, but he thought he had the same challenge.

“We both had to replace legends,” Bybee said.

Lawhon’s transition has been smooth at Klein. When Baker left the school, there were questions as to who could fill his shoes. Most parents were pleased when Lawhon took the job.

His heroics earned him MVC Player of the Week honors and a spot on College Soccer News’ National Team of the Week on both occasions.
